Customer story: The need to monitor expiry dates
“Our warehouse staff often miss items that are close to their expiry date. Couldn’t Business Central just show us a clear reminder?”
For companies dealing with items that have expiry dates, such as food products, chemicals, or medical supplies, keeping track is critical. In standard Business Central, the information exists in the Item Ledger Entry—but users must navigate to it manually. Our customer wanted expiry tracking to be visible at a glance in their Role Center.
How we solved it: A tailored Business Central extension
We created a cue for expiring items that appears directly in the relevant role centers:
- Opens the item ledger entry with a filtered view of items nearing expiry.
- Supports configurable date ranges: choose to see items expiring in a week, a month, or any period that fits your processes.
- Provides immediate visibility so warehouse and procurement staff can act early.
- Built cleanly with event subscriptions and in full compliance with Microsoft coding standards—upgrade‑friendly and analyzer‑clean.
The result: no more surprises. Staff can easily monitor expiring lots and take action before issues arise.

Business Central role center (overview)
The role center is the user’s entry point and home page in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Multiple role centers can be developed, each tailored to the profile of its intended users. For example, role centers can be designed for different levels within an organization, such as business owners, sales and department leads.
