“Our sales orders have a work description field—why can’t purchase orders have the same?”

In standard Business Central, sales documents allow an arbitrarily long multi‑line text in the work description field. That field does not exist on purchase documents, even though many organizations would benefit from adding detailed notes for purchasing workflows. Our customer wanted the same flexibility in purchase orders as in sales orders.

How we solved it: A tailored Business Central extension

We replicated the functionality from sales orders into purchase orders, including:

  • work description field on purchase orders.
  • Automatic carry‑over of the field to posted purchase invoices and posted purchase receipts.
  • Seamless integration into standard pages and reports.
  • Full compliance with Microsoft coding standards (clean event subscriptions, no core object changes, analyzer‑clean code).

This made it possible for purchasers to capture essential notes directly in purchase documents, ensuring clarity for both finance and operations teams.
